Both Areli and Rhean are excited about their upcoming Clubs this year. I was looking at your website and wanted to point out we have something in common. Our grandparents were married to each other in their older years. My Grandma is Elsie Surber and married Niels Ferslev when they were seniors. I was just a baby when she passed but you may have remembered her. They were living at the home on Fisk Street with Colburn Park in the backyard. My mother told me that they met at a senior social gathering. According to my mom, my grandmother was a social butterfly. She lost her first husband to pneumonia when she had two young daughters (Betty and Marilyn) and lived in Escanaba, MI. She remarried to my grandpa (John Surber) who was working for Ford in Michigan and they had three children. John, Nancy and Connie (my mom). They sold the house in Escanaba and moved to Maple Valley and bought a farm. My Grandpa died when my mom was in her teens so they sold the farm and she moved to Green Bay I think around 1962. All the children were out of the house so she was an empty nester. She was involved with Highland Crest Baptist Church which was brand new at the time. My parents were the first couple to get married in the church. She lived in a pink house on W. Mason near the Green Bay Plaza. My mom said that she loved to be able to walk to the plaza and shop. She didn't drive so this was an ideal location. They must have moved into the Western Ave house after they got married. The Fisk House is the house that my mom describes the most and she said that she loved to have cookouts in the backyard. My brother remembered that it looked over the park pool. She did get sick in 1968 and died suddenly. Everyone thought she would get well but she never recovered and died in the hospital. My mom, aunts and cousins only have sweet things to say about her.
