Mr. Cardinal,
I note from the Completion Report of Dam Construction that your father,
A.L.Cardinal was an engineer in the concrete portion of construction
from 10
September 1940 until 17 March 1941. We do have several books of photos
depicting construction every day from start to finish. We also have all
the
construction drawings, and many reports, design analysis, etc. I don't
know
if we have any photos in digital format or others that we could send to
you
by conventional mail. I will check on that.
We had a "Golden Anniversary Celebration" of the dam construction on 13
June
1992. I think approximately 70 of the "Dam Builders" were in attendance.
I'm
sorry that we apparently did not get in touch with your father. I will
see if
we still have one of the memento photo albums that included a color
photo of
the dam and a group picture of those in attendance. If so, I will send
it to
you, if you will furnish your address.
If your father is still able to travel it would be my pleasure and that
of my
staff to treat him to a personal tour of the dam and to allow him all
the
time he wants to peruse photos and records of the dam construction. In
any
event, please convey my heartfelt thanks for his work on the Nimrod Dam
(oldest, but still best in the Little Rock District) and his part in
saving
us all from a future of tyranny.
Sincerely,
John Young

My father, Alton Cardinal, was an engineer with the Nimrod Dam project
at its
early stages of construction, until he was drafted just before WW2. He
is
now 92. He was very interested in a printout of your web page on the
dam's
history ( http://www.swl.usace.army.mil/parks/nimrod/damandlake.htm),
especially the photos included there. I wonder if there are other
pictures
of the construction process, especially the early phases, which I could
share
with him. Would you know of any such photos, or have suggestions for
other
contacts?
